New research indicates that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become starving," described one woman.
The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
